BATTEN INNERWAVE ART
About Batten Innerwave
I am an artist who grew up in London, working in the space between the street and the subconscious. Through expressive portraiture, I blend dark, urban textures with surreal, dreamlike elements to explore identity, emotion and the parts of ourselves that stay hidden. I work mainly with acrylic paints and mixed media on canvas, building each piece through layered marks, erasures and glazes to create a sense of weight and atmosphere. Influenced by underground culture, industrial architecture and the quiet tension of the city at night, my portraits are less about likeness and more about presence. They are artifacts of a moment — a feeling pinned to the surface — inviting viewers to project their own stories into the work.
Surreal urban working of the mind
I bring the outside in. My studio is a space where local observations meet the canvas through steady, intentional layers.
Physicality of
Each canvas carries a heavy, tactile presence. I use mixed media to build a surface that feels like weathered brickwork, offering a solid connection to the city.
Urban pallet
My colors are drawn from concrete and low light. I use deep charcoals and muted steel tones to frame the focus, keeping the atmosphere quiet but consistent.
